What Causes Chimney Leaks?
We refer to a “chimney leak” as any situation in which water is entering the chimney system. For over 20 years, we’ve encountered nearly every type of leaky chimney imaginable. Causes can include:
- Damaged or missing chimney cap or chase cover
- Deteriorated chimney crown
- Dislodged, rusted, or missing chimney flashing
- Cracks in the chimney’s bricks
- Crumbling chimney mortar
- Missing Bricks
Water is Your Chimney’s Worst Enemy
A leaky chimney can cause several issues within your chimney and the surrounding area. Leaks in the bricks, a cracked crown, or damaged cap can cause serious damage to the structural integrity of your chimney, fireplace system, or the areas around the structure. Advanced Chimney Sweep can diagnose the leak, propose repairs, and correct it.
Leaky Chimney Repair
After determining why the chimney leak is happening and where the water is coming in, our Chimney Professionals will get to work solving the problem. We have several ways to address leaky chimneys:
Full Coverage Chimney Caps & Chase Covers
A damaged or missing chimney cap or chase cover can be a problem, but it’s one we can fix. We offer custom full coverage chimney caps and chase covers designed to provide full protection for your chimney system.
Chimney crown sealing or rebuilding
Small cracks in a concrete chimney crown should be sealed to prevent further water intrusion. In some cases the damage may be severe enough that rebuilding the chimney crown is the best repair.
Brick Replacement
Loose and spalling chimney bricks require replacement. If the problem is widespread, some or all of the masonry will need to be rebuilt.
Masonry Tuckpointing
Tuckpointing is the process that removes deteriorated mortar joints and adds strong new mortar between the bricks. This prevents leaks and strengthens the chimney.
Chimney Flashing Resealing
Flashing around the base of the chimney, where it meets the roof, can warp or pull away from the chimney. This is a very important area to protect against moisture intrusion. We can repair flashing to prevent water intrusion.
Chimney Waterproofing
After the chimney is repaired our technicians would apply a waterproofing sealant. This will protect the masonry from future water intrusion.
