The Three Stages of Creosote

As creosote accumulates in the chimney it goes through three different stages:

Stage 1: In this stage, newly formed deposits stick to the flue. It is a powdery substance that is mostly soot and very easy to sweep clean.

Stage 2: As the creosote continues to accumulate, it is becoming harder, dark, flaky, and more flammable. It is more difficult to clean in this stage without the use of professional tools. A chimney sweep may use rotary-powered sweeping to remove stage 2 creosote.

Stage 3: This is the most dangerous stage of creosote development. It is now a thick, tarry material that is highly flammable, substantially increasing the risk of a chimney fire. It often requires professional chemicals to remove it from the flue completely. When we see Stage 3 creosote that can NOT safely be removed by other methods, we often use a Poultice Creosote Remover (PCR), a chemical creosote treatment from ChimneySaver Products.

Chemical Creosote Treatments (PCR) For Stage 3 Creosote

Professional Chimney Sweep in West Columbia, SC

The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) recommends creosote removal when there is an accumulation of 1/8” or more. When a wood-burning heating appliance like a fireplace or stove is used, but not regularly maintained, creosote deposits continue to accumulate. It is not only a fire hazard but is also much more challenging to remove. When 3rd-degree creosote is discovered in the chimney or stovepipe, our Certified Chimney Professionals will use chemical creosote treatments, including Poultice Creosote Remover (PCR), to safely and efficiently remove the creosote. It's faster, more productive, and less messy than manual cleaning methods.
