Creative Ways To Store Your Firewood This Summer

Have you ever been with your family and friends, sitting by the fire, and the night slips away? You realize the fire is dying, and your woodpile is nowhere close. It’s raining and you need to go out to get more wood. The scenario is much too familiar. Summer is no time to ease up on the care of wood storage.

With some creativity, you can have that wood stored close by. You don’t have to worry about going out in the rainy weather to fill your bin and keep your fire burning.

Summer Firewood Storage in Lexington SCLet’s talk about storage.

There are many options, both inside and out, to protect your wood from the rain and critters getting in. You will want to take into consideration the placement of where you will store your wood. Be sure to store it somewhere that will stay dry. Lastly, you’ll want to make sure you can easily access it throughout the changing seasons. So, let’s take a look at some of your options.

Outside storage

  • Fire ring – These are available at any hardware or big box store. Be sure to pick up a tarp to protect your wood from the rain.
  • Upcycle – You can use an old bureau or bench to convert into a holder for your wood. Most likely there will be a top or a cover to protect from the weather.
  • DIY – There are many materials you can find for a quick build. Try using two cinder blocks and four 2 x 4s. Place the 2 x 4s upright in the cinder blocks. Then, stack the wood within the 2 x 4s.
  • Other trees – At the bare minimum, you can stack your wood between two trees. Place the wood on leftover pallets you may have laying around. This will allow for good air flow around and under the wood.

Inside storage

  • Beautiful baskets, bins, or crates. You can beautify anything with a little organization. Use decorative baskets to keep your wood in. Be creative. Store your wood next to your fireplace, but not too close, loose embers can catch on fire if too close.
  • Log rack – You can buy a wood storage bin or log rack at your local hardware store or big box store. This can be wood, iron, or metal.
  • The fireplace – During the summer a great way to store your firewood is in the fireplace while not in use. This is quite decorative and very stylish. You will want to make sure it is dry.

Benefits Of Proper Storage

Keeping your wood dry and out of the elements will prevent bugs and critters from nesting in them. But be mindful of the following:

  • Choose an area that is at least 5-6 feet away from your house.
  • Be sure that air is circulating around your wood pile.
  • Rotate your wood to avoid rotting pieces.
  • Store in the sun if possible.
